We Have to Keep Talking

The world is moving – fast. It isn’t going to stop, and I’d actually argue things might move even faster.

The real question is: Can humans even keep up?

Thought this podcast with @Bryan was really revealing about what types of conversations we should be having within the business realm.

Really loved this quote I pulled from Thomas

…work and society is changing. Humans are great at pattern recognition and adapting to just about anything. To stay the same and speak the same jargon when it isn’t being heard or recieved is vocational suicide.

We have to keep talking. This is the first step in “keeping up”.

What kind of conversations are happening within other teams? Are these sorts of things even talked about?

Great question @ben ! Curious how our friends who have just transitioned into new positions see these conversations changing, either due to new environs or deeper AI adoption? @Jake_Johnson @vivekaleemelo @schuboxaz

Thought this interview was a 10/10! @Bryan & Thomas being dudes who have seen this industry progress & morph into what it is today, is a testament to how evolving keeps you in the game. They’re both 20+ years deep.

My question is, do designers risk spreading themselves too thin trying to check majority of boxes skills wise, (for the sake of evolution) or is staying an expert in one realm the move long term. Be an expert in one thing, (creating longevity) ?

My guess is that it’s super dependent on the org size, and what industry that they’re in.

Good question for @EricZ

Right now, the dynamic I see in my own career is that you have primary and secondary skills that stick with you, and these allow you to pick up temporary skills.

A primary skill might be wordpress development or UX Design, but a temporary skill might be marketing-resource data-migration. Sometimes these temporary skills jump up into the primary or secondary category.

The ‘skills’ that don’t end up on the resume, though, are the ones that allow you to learn and pick up these temporary skills to solve the problems you’re focused on right now. Curiosity is a big one.

So don’t try to collect all the skills, many are temporary, but each one you do pick up is a worthwhile workout.

Haha, love this framing. I definitely feel this as an engineer as well.
