We're in a World Where Designers Have Huge Amounts of Leverage

Going back to this idea, and thinking about how design will evolve. A lot of the old model of design was centered around artifacts:

screens, pages, layouts, flows, visual polish… still important, but will be compressed.

I was arguing back in 2010 that the mindset shift had to move from “designing objects” to “designing outcomes.”

Our new world design shifts the value toward:

  • reducing uncertainty
  • shaping decisions
  • interpreting feedback
  • orchestrating systems
  • aligning teams
  • understanding human behavior
  • breaking down complexity

This type of work moves beyond direct work with users… it has toconsider how agents address this value too. Here’s our first pass at the User needs block for the agent operations. Learning a lot in this process.

This will force many designers to adapt. Reminds me of using the Commodore back in the early years… it all seemed so quaint to make pixel art.

Compression seems to be the definitely route, especially with LLMs being able to sharpen and hone the outputs with specific intent.

UIs will probrably be LLM (or simply algorithm) powered to personalize all of the content.

Thinking that we’ve touched on this before…

It’s all about creating high leverage activities that produce value. @stephanie_muxfeld has a short article on this
