What dashboard are you trying to optimize? See how you can test it

We just dropped a new Concept Page on Dashboard Engagement and how to use UX metrics to test whether your dashboards are clear, useful, and actually doing their job.

To bring it to life, we tested a banking platform’s member dashboard and saw strong results across four key metrics:

This dashboard helped users see where they stand financially and encouraged them to take next steps, providing a solid combo of clarity and motivation.

As we build out more Concept Pages, we’re thinking about which UX metrics make the most sense for different types of dashboards:

:small_blue_diamond: Banking dashboards benefit most from Usability, Intent, and Satisfaction — users need to feel in control and confident after reviewing personal finances.

:small_blue_diamond: Ad campaign dashboards call for Success, Comprehension, and Engagement — users need to spot trends fast and take action without confusion.

:small_blue_diamond: Data storage dashboards need Usefulness, Frequency, and Effort — users care about visibility, efficiency, and how hard it is to manage storage over time.

:speech_balloon: What other types of dashboards would you like to see us test? Productivity tools? Developer platforms? Internal admin dashboards?

Interesting to see how the different types of dashboards prefer different UX metrics. It makes a whole lot of sense to frame them in this way.

That does make me wonder if there are dashboard patterns to consider. Something like analytical (dashboards where their main purpose is to reveal something) vs utilitarian (ease of actions is the main target), that way we could create a UX metric pattern for the groupings.

Definitely, that’s why the metrics change based on the user needs. Banking dashboards need to provide findable information above all, but may also be trying to create engagement with new features. Ad campaign platforms are going to be more analytical, so intuitive usability and comprehension of the layout is more important.

One dashboard I think is pretty cool is Notion. Because it’s technically “live” and ever changing, I feel like they’ve done a really cool job making that work as well as it does.

Notion’s main dashboard is pretty neat. I wonder how well it would perform @MoData
