How to test your site's Filter & Sort Features

We all rely on filters and sorting tools to narrow down choices whether we’re shopping, comparing plans, or researching financial products. But these UI elements can easily become overwhelming, hidden, or just plain unhelpful if they’re not designed with users in mind.

That’s why we created a new Filters & Sort UI Concept Page, focused on testing the usability and clarity of decision-support tools.

To bring it to life, we tested NerdWallet’s credit card search filters: a high-traffic area where users are often looking for the best card for their situation (like students, travelers, or balance transfers).

Here’s how it scored:

The results showed that users had a smooth experience overall. The filters were easy to use, sorting options felt satisfying, and most were able to locate the right credit card category with little confusion.

The Concept Page walks through how to structure a test like this and how small tweaks to filters and sorting labels can boost clarity and reduce drop-off.

:megaphone: What other products or industries would you like to see tested for filters and sort UI?
App stores? Clothing sites? SaaS feature selectors?

I have a few ideas in mind on what we could test. Maybe a special GRF feature?

Loooove this @MoData! I feel like filters are such a small UI touch but such a big decision moment. This makes it super clear.

One thing I’ve picked up on as we’ve done more testing of filters on different platforms is the fact that they should be insightful and empowering, not just usable: filters should reveal to users the array of options they have, and make them feel like the product speaks to their mindset.
